This was my third time to solo hike in Big Bend.
I wrote about my second trip staying in Terlingua. You can read about it here. I stayed again at the La Posada Milagro. It’s walking distance to the Starlight Theatre and other restaurants. It is a really nice place. Has a fully equipped outdoor kitchen and two patios.
My first day of hiking took me to the Big Bend State Park just a few miles down the road. I hiked the Closed Canyon Trail. It was absolutely perfect weather with most of the hike in the shade. It was a short trip only 1.5 miles round trip. It prepared me for the next hike to Emory Peak.
The Emory Peak Trail is a 10.3 mile hike with 2400 ft in elevation. Last year I was able to make it half way. This year I want to make it and I did. It took me 7 hours to finish and the beer at the car was very well deserved. It was the hardest trail I ever tried. The last 50 feet required rock climbing and scared some of the younger folks so I called it a win and started down after about an hour rest. Again perfect weather with a sweatshirt needed in the shade and a t-shirt in the sun. The last 1.5 miles I left my backpack in a locker provided by the park. It made the rest of the trip bearable. The last half mile was real tough. My legs were absolutely killing me but I made it!
The hike down was so much easier except for the steps. With my thighs on fire it was difficult! Thank goodness I had a good hiking pole. All in all the hike was VERY demanding but I made it!!! Next year I think I am going to Palo Duro Canyon but my 10 mile hiking days are over.
