According to Senate Bill 11 school boards are required to have a record vote on whether to adopt a policy to create a period of religious study by March 1. This bill was sponsored by our own Senator MAGA Mayes Middleton. This wasn’t about religion. It was about whether it was necessary, and it isn’t.
According to the invited speaker students have ample time to pray in line with the 1st Amendment of the Constitution. Besides the fact that students can already pray, and gather together, and create religious clubs, the bill requires, not only consent by the parents, they must waive their Constitutional rights to take action against the school board over the policy. (Watch the video for the exact wording.) This would put the district in a difficult position of limiting the rights of parents for a problem that doesn’t exist.
The entire video on the issue lasts just a few minutes with the Board voting unanimously to opt out of a religious period and continue providing students the freedom to pray. CCISD joins other school boards and Texas faith leaders across the state in opposition to the bill.
