Why did SpaceX have another RUFUS? (Rapid Unscheduled F*** Ups)

March 7, 2025

It’s the second time SpaceX blew up within a few months. This is not normal.

One of the last classes I took at NASA was a course concerning Root Cause Analysis. It was a class teaching how NASA conducts an investigation to determine the cause of an accident. NASA has standards to determine if an independent RCA is to be conducted. At the time I believe the standards included the loss of life, or injury to an individual, and/or the loss of a mission that is over $1 Million. The Challenger and Columbia accidents are examples. Unlike these two SpaceX accidents did not result in a loss of life but they have all resulted in huge economical impacts.

At the time of the class SpaceX had just experienced one of their many accidents. I asked if NASA would be involved in this RCA. The instructor was reluctant to address this because the contract between NASA and SpaceX allowed them to self investigate their accidents. So SpaceX has investigated over and over again and yet their RUFUS continue. Something is truly f***ed up.

As with any other NASA investigation an independent group of experts perform a deep dive into the accident and will issue a detailed report. Have w never seen a detailed report from SpaceX? All we read about the accidents are what SpaceX gives to the media and then the accidents continue.

Maybe one day SpaceX will stop learning from their fuck ups and start learning how to prevent their fuck ups. This isn’t a fucking game. This explosion cause air traffic to stop on the east coast. I spewed debris over the launch area. If the root cause of these accidents is not adequately investigated what else could we lose?

BTW. Fuck Musk.

Trump Urges MAGA Federal Employees to Resign

February 19, 2025

It’s time to do your part.

According to the Washington InCider Trump has called on all federal employees that support Elon Musk’s DOGE to resign by the end of the month. “Because of the worthless bureaucracy deeply embedded in the Federal workforce we will not meet our goals of cutting waste, fraud, and abuse. I am calling on all MAGA workers to help meet our goals and resign by Feb 28.”

The vast majority of all federal workers at the top level of government are MAGA supporters. Cutting these positions would cripple the agencies they serve but it would help Trump meet his goals which could also be to cripple the agencies. “Self respecting Trump supporters do not need to be supporting the tax sucking bureaucracy and should be glad to resign.” Comments from the MAGA employees were swift and mixed.

“I’m just 3 years from being vested and to qualify for retirement. I can’t resign!” –Name withheld

“I’ve been sucking on the tit of the government for 30 years! I deserve this job and will not resign fuck Donald Trump!” –Was fired a day later

“I’m an entitled employee. Unlike my counterparts I am special and important to the Space Agency at Johnson Space Center. I am sure Trump doesn’t mean me.” –Name withheld

After Elon Musk’s Nazi salute NASA to stop all SpaceX funding

January 26, 2025

#FAFO

Throwing the Nazi salute to trump supporters has consequences. This should have happened a long time ago because of the multiple RUDs (Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly), or as NASA engineers call it, “explosions” to his vehicles. Eventually you have to stop blowing up vehicles and learn how to stop blowing up vehicles. But I digress.

According to a NASA Press Release:
“NASA has always been an organization dedicated to hiring the best and brightest of Americans to lead the country, safely, into space. We are a diverse organization and have never tolerated racism, sexism, or antisemitism in our workforce. Elon Musk’s Nazi salute is not only repulsive it violates every policy at NASA concerning the treatment of our employees. Because of this NASA will cease to fund SpaceX activities.”

Throwing the Nazi salute is a show of support of trump, facism, of Hitler’s attack on Jews, gays, non christians, and other minorities. The attacks of the Hitler regime were a display of the worst of humanity. Those who throw the Nazi sign do so with intent. They do it with purpose. The NASA Press Release continues:
“We will not tolerate this behavior. Either Elon Musk disassociates himself from SpaceX or we will immediately cease all funding for future flights and/or experiments. This is not negotiable.”

UPDATE: NASA has issued an update on this situation after trump appointed an interim NASA Administrator:

“After further review we have decided to rescind our threat of pulling funding. Without DEI we will be forced to hire unqualified white people which does not include Jews. So this is no longer an issue. Heil, mein Führer!”

Welcome to Satire Sunday.

Adolph’s Next target: Federal Employees

November 25, 2024

It’s almost funny. Almost. Remember. You wanted this.

Anchor Baby Vivek Ramaswamy and South African mother***er Elon Musk have their sights set on the next boogie man, Federal Employees, and they are easy pickings. Ramasway/Musk are going to run the Department of privatizing the shit out of everything because the private section can do things better and cheaper. (LOL) That’s not really true but who really gives two fucks about the truth now a days. These guys have an audience, one that will believe anything they are told. Anything. So this is how they will demonize the Federal workforce.

Federal employees are over paid. This isn’t true but it is an easy concept to make MAGAts foam at the mouth. Federal employees are paid on a schedule. They do have some good benefits such as being able to invest in a 401K with matching funds and good health care benefits (they are not free). This compensates for their relatively low pay compared to the private sector.

Federal employees are lazy. The private sector can do their jobs faster, cheaper, and better. This is sort of true since the private sector can treat their employees like crap, work them to death, and provide few if any benefits. Feds are not profit motivated. In the space industry that is pretty damn important. The private sector is profit motivated and will do anything, including cutting corners, to make money.

Federal Employees get benefits for life. Again, not true but who cares? Health care benefits carry over for retired feds but they continue to pay for them. They are NOT free. They get a small pension, not a salary for life. They get social security because they paid for the benefits and they can invest in a 401k just like everyone else can.

You can’t fire federal employees. Again simply not true. The Feds invest in employees and work to retain them. This is a myth that will be perpetuated throughout this process.

Federal employees are taking your money! Yep that is an easy one. They are the boogey men of 2024. The other ones, except for Mexicans, have run their course including the Gays, teachers, police, Muslims, Asian Americans, African Americans, etc etc etc.

BOO Mutherfuckers! BOO! Direct your hate towards federal employees now!

Cuts coming to NASA/JSC civil service employees

November 23, 2024

In the words of Jack Reacher, “Remember, you wanted this.”

Tom Cruise had a great line in Reacher. Before taking on 5 guys in a fight Reacher warned them about taking that final step. “Remember, you wanted this.” He then beat the hell out of all of them. It’s a great scene. Go watch it.

So all the NASA MAGAts of Johnson Space Center might be facing their own Reacher named Vivek Ramaswamy (BTW did you know he is an anchor baby?) who is teaming up with the Vice President Elect Elon Musk to cut spending in the federal government. For NASA that means privatize services at the expense of civil service employees. The argument is easy to understand even though it’s not true. Civil Service employees do not add value to the NASA program. Instead of paying Civil Service employees a salary and great benefits, just pay the contractors like SpaceX. After all most of NASA’s money is spent on contractors.

And you know how much trump loves Elon. So be prepared for an early retirement. And remember, you wanted this.

Why is NASA continuing to do business with SpaceX/Musk?

November 20, 2023

T-Minus WTF?

What the fuck NASA? Major companies across the country are pausing or cancelling ads on Twitter (now X) after Elon Musk endorsed an antisemitic conspiracy theory. These companies include Apple, Paramount, Comcast, IBM, Warner Bros., the European Commission and the movie studio Lionsgate. The tweet even got a response from the Whitehouse:  “We condemn this abhorrent promotion of antisemitic and racist hate in the strongest terms, which runs against our core values as Americans.”

And yet….billions of tax dollars are continuing to be spent on SpaceX services. NASA should take a stand and consider their own “pause” of tax dollars to Space X until they rid themselves of this disease. This cannot be tolerated. Twitter has turned into a hate filled cluster fuck. It’s a breeding ground for keyboard warrior racists with the opportunity provided by Twitter to spread their hate.

NASA shouldn’t be tolerating this. At all.

What happens during a government shutdown?

September 26, 2023

Nothing good. At all.

It looks like the republican controlled House of Representatives is going to shutdown the government due their inability and unwillingness to govern. I’ve been through a few shutdowns with NASA beginning with Newt Gingrich. So how will that affect you?

  • Generally all federal employees cannot work. They can’t go to work and they can’t work from home. They can’t work offsite. They can’t Zoom or conference call. Nothing. Unless you are considered an “essential” employee you are not working. It is literally against the law. Space Station Mission Control personnel are an example of essential employees. They will continue coming to work or other essential employees can work from home.
  • Other essential employees are the military, Federal Marshalls, other Homeland and Defense department employees. They will be able to work but not get paid.
  • All federal employee’s paychecks will stop including the military. Eventually they will receive backpay but that also is not guaranteed. I can see the argument: “Why should they get paid if they didn’t work?”
  • Federal parks are closed as well as all federal properties.
  • Social Security checks will continue.
  • Medicare will continuing paying medical providers
  • FAA will continue as well as travel.
  • IRS will stop
  • Your local congressional office will close.
  • Members of Congress can continue to work.
  • The affects on Federal contractors varies. Some contractors that the opportunity to cut costs and furlough their employees without pay or back pay.

To some a shutdown is a free vacation. To others it is a needless hardship on their families. To the country it is an embarrassment. Look for the Republicans in the House to deny backpay. It just might happen this time.

SpaceX “Unscheduled rapid disassembly”. It’s not rocket science. Literally.

April 21, 2023

A spokesman for SpaceX said an “unscheduled rapid disassembly” is SpaceX code word for “It blew up”.

After 14 years of exploding vehicles, SpaceX blew up another one yesterday. At least this one didn’t have a crew and it didn’t blow up the launch site. There comes a point when you have to ask if there is a systemic problem associated with all of these failures. It’s not rocket science. NASA has been flying for over 60 years. They know what works and what doesn’t, and how to avoid them in the future.

It’s easy to say after a failure, and SpaceX did, that this was a successful flight (up until it blew up). Science includes learning from your mistakes, miscalculations, poor designs, and reckless development. In the early days of space flight there were accidents, the most notable, Apollo 1, which took the lives of three astronauts. It took 1.5 years to get back to flying after a complete analysis and modifications to the vehicle to prevent another similar accident. That was 60 ago.

Yes human space flight is risky. We know that. We’ve known it for over 60 years. It’s nothing new. Repeating the mistakes of the past is not science. Unfortunately NASA will not be in charge of the Root Cause Analysis and the mistakes and lessons learned will not be made public like the reports from NASA failures.

Would NASA pull Elon Musk’s contracts for SpaceX?

November 2, 2022

I worked in software at NASA. One of my last assignments required monitoring a conference call with Boeing and SpaceX concerning software testing. I was never comfortable with the attitude towards software by SpaceX, but that is for another post.

Yesterday Elon Musk, after taking control of Twitter, posted a conspiracy theory concerning the attack on Speaker Pelosi’s husband. Twitter has quickly becoming a cesspool of misinformation and Musk, a billionaire with time on his idle hands, is twitting with the best of them. I would bet Musk is going to tweet something else, maybe something near racist, or homophobic, or antisemitic. He will push the envelope on misinformation, conspiracy theories, and civility and when he does NASA should consider pulling their contracts from SpaceX.

In August SpaceX won a $1.4 Billion contract to shuttle astronauts to the International Space Station. The total so far that has been awarded to SpaceX is over $5 Billion. If Musk would ever dive head first into the Twitter cesspool NASA should seriously consider pulling their contracts with him. From NPR:

Musk himself inflamed those concerns on Sunday when he tweeted a link to unfounded, homophobic allegations about the violent attack on Paul Pelosi, the husband of Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Replying to a tweet from Hillary Clinton about the attack, Musk wrote: “there is a tiny possibility there might be more to this story than meets the eye.” He included a link to an article from the Santa Monica Observer, a fringe website with a history of publishing false stories, which makes lurid claims about the attack without evidence.

NPR Twitter Owner Elon Musk shares conspiracy theory about Pelosi

What kind of human being makes fun of an 82 year old who was viciously attacked with a hammer? What kind of human beings gives this man a $1.4 Billion contract?

Returning to the Moon, safely, is not an option.

July 12, 2019

I have a theory about this

William Gerstenmaier, the longtime associate administrator for human exploration at NASA, has been reassigned to a new role as special adviser to NASA’s deputy administrator. The move signifies something of a demotion for Gerstenmaier at the agency. As head of the human exploration division, Gerstenmaier has overseen many of NASA’s biggest projects for human spaceflight, such as the operations on the International Space Station; the development of NASA’s next big rocket, the Space Launch System; and the Commercial Crew program, an initiative to launch astronauts to the ISS using commercial spacecraft.

Going from managing billions in project assets and hundreds of employees to an “advisor” means something wasn’t right. Gerstenmaier was the modern day “Right Stuff”. He knew what he was doing and was well respected. And he probably told the truth about a trip to the Moon by 2024.

Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX), who chairs the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee said it very well

The Trump Administration’s ill-defined crash program to land astronauts on the Moon in 2024 was going to be challenging enough to achieve under the best of circumstances. Removing experienced engineering leadership from that effort and the rest of the nation’s human spaceflight programs at such a crucial point in time seems misguided at best.

I will be more blunt. Going to the Moon by 2024 is not safe. We do not have a lander. We do not have a heavy lift vehicle. We do not have a service module. We don’t even have a completed Command Module. Going to the Moon with that schedule and the current resources means cutting corners and it’s not safe.

Gerstenmaier has been replaced with a yes man. That isn’t safe either. Returning to the moon safely is not an option. It is the mission.
