It wasn’t said out loud by the panelists, but it was loud and clear.
During a post-2024 election panel at TribFest in Austin, I listened as speakers claimed the Democratic Party failed to offer a candidate worth voting for.
When Q&A opened, I asked them to break down that math: On one hand, a twice-convicted felon. On the other, a prosecutor who served as a District Attorney, State Attorney General, U.S. Senator, and Vice President. What, exactly, made the candidate with that record so unpalatable compared to a convicted felon?
The room went quiet. After a noticeable hesitation, a panelist offered a non-answer. But an audience member captured the unvarnished reality, blurting out what everyone was thinking: “If she had been a white male, she would have won.”
It was a blunt assessment, and a depressing reminder of the double standards still shaping American politics. Texas voters can truly suck at times.
