Loaning Campaign Cash: Angela Paxton

May 8, 2018

If conservatives in Texas Senate District 8 didn’t like Bill and Hillary Clinton, they are going to absolutely hate Ken and Angela Paxton.

From https://politicspaysforpaxton.com
Angela Paxton is the wife of our current Texas Attorney General, Ken Paxton, who is mired in a felony trial due to security fraud. Paxton (Ken) has loaned $2.6 Million to his wife’s campaign for Senator District 8 and has guaranteed the loan with his campaign account. $2 Million has a 3.6% interest rate while the $500,000 loan has an 8.5% rate. The latest loan from Paxton’s (Ken’s) campaign is for $100,000 with a rate of 8% but does not have a guarantor.
Dan Patrick has donated $75,000 in cash and in-kind contributions for advertisement. He has a boner for Angela for her anti-public education stance. Look for her to be a solid supporter of school vouchers.

I seriously doubt Angela intends to pay any of loans back leaving Paxton’s war chest with a bit less money to pay his legal bills. If Angela, by chance, loses in November it will be a bit hard to raise money to pay off your debts, especially if you are NOT in office! Imagine the call “I didn’t win but could you donate $5000 to help me pay off a loan from my husband’s campaign?” Yeah. Right.

Angela like Kathaleen Wall and State Representative Dennis Paul is basically buying an election. Kathaleen loaned herself $6 Million for a losing effort for Congress. Dennis Paul raised over 75% of his funds from his own engineering firm for a total of $156,000. He won.

It would be funny to watch Angela lose. And her husband go to jail.

Raising Campaign Cash: Dennis Paul Texas HD129

May 6, 2018
From the Houston Chronicle

This isn’t pretty. It’s ugly. It includes a raid by the FBI!

Dennis Paul, endorsed by the NRA, can’t seem to raise money except from his own company and another engineering firm that was raided by the FBI. Paul owns Paul Engineering which has loaned his campaign over $150,000. His current ethics report has his loan balance at $156,000 with a cash on hand balance of only $37,089.32. He only raised 47,237.93 during his last period which included $5000 from James Dannebaum, his biggest contributor.

According to the San Antonio Express and News Dannenbaum has a “controversial history along the Texas border” which included a raid from the FBI. From the Express News:

Dannenbaum Engineering has stirred a lot of controversy as it has grown into one of the dominant engineering companies in South Texas over the past 30 years. On April 26, the FBI executed a broad raid of its offices across the state, including in San Antonio, to gather records related to the company’s pursuit of infrastructure projects in the Laredo area. A decade ago, reports from the El Paso Times and other media outlets linked the company to another FBI corruption probe in El Paso County.

Ouch. I guess engineers stick together. Other donors include a number of PAC’s including $1000 from the USAA Employee PAC. (USAA is an insurance company) But….back to the $156,000 loan. Paul is one of the few individuals who bought his nomination to represent the Republic Party. Much like Kathleen Wall who put over $6 Million of her own money to buy the nomination for CD2. She lost. Paul didn’t.

Dennis might want to remember nothing good comes from an FBI raid. Ask Paul Manafort. Or Michael Cohen. He might want to considering returning the $5000 and borrowing from his company again.

Cinco de Mayo. Maybe it's time to start voting?

May 4, 2018

I’ve said it beforeFrom History.com:

During the French-Mexican War (1861-1867), an outnumbered Mexican army defeats a powerful invading French force at the small town of Puebla de Los Angeles. The retreat of the French troops at the Battle of Puebla represented a great moral victory for the people of Mexico, symbolizing the country’s ability to defend its sovereignty against a powerful foreign nation.

Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican independence day and it is not a day celebrated in Mexico. Many in the United States will put on a multi colored sombrero, a sarape, eat a taco salad, and drink margaritas at their favorite Mexican restaurant thinking its Mexican Independence Day. They know not what they are doing, but they are at least having fun.

Maybe some day the Mexican Americans in the United States will honor those who died in Puebla by simply putting down their TV remote and take a few minutes to vote. The party of trump doesn’t care if Latinos vote or not. They expect about 20-30% of their vote no matter what they say about them. They do not intend to reach out to Latinos unless it is to grab them by the throat and throw them back across the river. They will continue to insult them, their heritage, and their language because they know there will be no consequences for doing so. None. At all. Because Latinos do not vote.

It’s sad. All we ask is for a little help so we can have common sense immigration reform without the racism of the republic party. Its not that hard. If Latinos would just simply vote their strength no elected official would ever make a derogatory remark towards them.

Because if they did….they would get their asses kicked. Just like the French.

Houston Congressman nominates Trump for Nobel Peace Prize

May 3, 2018

#NoPlaceButTexas

Louie Gohmert got out played. Congressman Brian Babin, who recently claimed the men and women of the FBI was locked into a conspiracy to remove the president, has nominated Trump for a Nobel Peace Prize. Here is the letter:

This letter wasn’t signed by Louie Gohmert. He knows better. Others include Congressman Matt Gaetz from Florida who has also called for an investigation into the “deep state” of the FBI. The other signatories are a bunch of nobodies looking for traction with their rabid, racist, base. Babin has nominated Trump for the Peace Prize because:

“President Trump has accomplished what no other President has ever accomplished in the history of the United States. He has forced a dictator to his knees by calling him names such as “Little Rocket Man” while squinting his eyes mocking his looks. Trump truly represents the morals, strength, and racism of the republican party.”

Well, he didn’t actually say that but you get the idea. Besides calling Kim Jung Un “Little Rocket Man” Trump hasn’t really done anything. He is getting played. We are getting played.
At least Louie Gohmert had a sewer plant named for him.

I'm retired. Bitches.

May 2, 2018

Give me a bit to explain the “bitches” reference.

We have a pretty close group of neighbors. Most are just a tad younger than us. In fact they are young enough to be our kids and they drink like them too! One day we were gathering at our regular place on the driveway and I walked up and said “What’s up bitches?”. Everyone got a laugh out of it so that sort of stuck. My neighbor gave me this great kitchen towel that seems appropriate. Thanks Amber!

But, back to the intent of this post. I retired from NASA last Friday after 29.5 years. I was going to wait till December but a friend of mine who is retiring in May said “What are you waiting for? Life is too short.” He is right. I left. Thank you NASA for the 29.5 years!

So now I intend to blog more and I have no boundaries or limitations, as if I had any to begin with. I intend to continue to be full of wit and I might even speak out about NASA and the trip to Mars that isn’t going to happen any time soon, and how SpaceX history of massive failures should be a wakeup call for many, especially the astronauts. I look forward to looking over campaign finance reports and restarting my “Spending Campaign Cash” series and voicing opinions on people who wake up and decide to run for an office they know nothing about. I might even start shaming the Hispanic Community because they do not vote their strength because nothing else has seemed to work. I also will continue blogging about consumer issues. I might even go to Austin next year to discuss issues with elected officials. I look forward to it all.

So, I am back. Bitches.

Trump: "Why are there Hispanics in the room?"

May 1, 2018

And yet….nearly 30% of Hispanics still support this racist president.

From the DailyBeast.com

Trump was at another one of his feel good rallies, re-energizing before facing the constant storm (Stormy) of scandals facing him, his family, his lawyers, and his administration. It has become a daily event. Yesterday it was the leak by his own attorneys of the 49 questions Special Counsel Mueller would like to ask trump. That over shadowed the multiple reports of his Chief of Staff, John Kelly, calling him an idiot. (Duh!)

But one bit of his speech stands out when asking:

“Any Hispanics in the room?” Trump asked to relative silence. “Naw, not so many? That’s OK.”

He was met with boos. He should have asked “Why are there any Hispanics in the room?” Imagine being a Hispanic in the crowd and having to face the boos and the racism from his base. It would be deserving. In fact a good ass kicking would be deserving. Trump is a politically ignorant, racist, lying, a-hole, of a human being. It is just that simple. How 30% of Hispanics (or anyone that that matter) can still support this man is beyond me.

Hopefully the Hispanics will show up in November and tell trump and his racist base that this behavior will no longer be tolerated. Hopefully.

If Texas Senator Ted Cruz was at the Alamo…..

April 25, 2018

There are questions about whether Travis actually drew a line in the sand asking for volunteers to stay and defend the Alamo. According to stories, everyone crossed the line except for one.

As many in Texas know, Ted Cruz is for Ted Cruz. If Ted Cruz was at the Alamo and that line had been drawn he would have been the first to push to the end of the line and out the gate. Cruz has a history of running away from a fight. He is like the guy in high school that instigates a fight then is the first to run away from it. He truly is a Texas sized weasel.

When Trump said incredible nasty things about his father and wife, Cruz took to the cameras, made a big scene, called Trump a sniveling coward and a serial liar. You can watch that here. That was then but this is now. Cruz has recently written praises for trump’s capability to disrupt and upend the “status quo” in a Time Magazine article. No matter what Trump does, Cruz will support him…..until it doesn’t help him with his re-election. Trump can count on Ted to jump across that line and run when it benefits him.

Cruz talks about being “Tough as Texas”. He is anything but tough. He is a weasel. He is a coward. No one likes him. He is in it just for himself. If he can’t defend his own family, how can you expect him to defend yours?

Bernie's last stand in Texas CD07 and CD23

April 23, 2018

FYI. Sanders won just 33% of the vote in the 2016 Texas primary.

Two Bernie Sanders’ candidates are in the runoff for Congress in Texas CD23 and CD7. Only one has raised money.

Rick Trevino is running for Congress in CD23. The seat is held by Will Hurd who has $1.8 Million in his campaign account. Rick has raised $24,000 with $4,000 Cash on Hand (COH) for a race that will require, at the very least, $2 million to be competitive. You have to thank Rick for running because it is a very difficult endeavor. If it was easy, everyone would be running. It isn’t. A candidate, especially one running for Congress, will spend countless hours on the phone asking for money. After raising money a candidate must hire staff to handle their field operations, media appearances, logistics, literature, and volunteer coordination including paying a hefty price for pizza. If a candidate cannot raise enough  money,  in relation to the office they are running for, they can’t buy pizza or anything else required to get your message out to the voters. Trevino faces Gina Ortiz Jones in the May 22 runoff. Jones has raised over $1 Million with $321,000 COH.

Laura Moser. On the other hand, Moser is another Bernie Sanders candidate but unlike many she has the ability to raise money. She has raised over $1 Million for the primary and has about $92,000 COH. Unlike many candidates endorsed by Bernie Sanders, Laura at least understands that until we change the laws regarding campaign finance a candidate must raise money, sometimes a lot of it, to run a successful campaign. Moser faces Lizzie Fletcher in the May 22 runoff. Fletcher has raised $1.3 Million with $391,000 COH.

Money itself does not mean strength in a candidate but little or no money is an indication of a candidate’s lack of understanding of the political reality running a campaign. As I have said in the past:

Sanders did a disservice to young people who wanted to become politically active after the 2016 election. Encouraging someone to run for office is easy. All you need is a few bucks and the time to put your name on the ballot. Unfortunately it is much harder to actually run for office, especially if you do not know what to do, you have no experience in doing it, and you have no ability or urge to raise the money to do it.

Little baby Briscoe has a temper tantrum

April 21, 2018

#NoPlaceButTexas. It’s a trump nickname “Little baby Briscoe”.

From the Texas Tribune

State Representative Briscoe Cain from Deer Park had a temper tantrum vowing legislation in retaliation to the walkouts of April 20th to honor students killed at Columbine High School. From the Star-Telegram:

One Texas lawmaker, Briscoe Cain, R-Deer Park, responded to the walkouts with a plans to draft law that will punish schools by making them return state funding if students participated in the gun control events. “…We will be seeking solutions to ensure they do not receive tax dollars for those students not in attendance,” Cain said in a press release.

Many school leaders took an adult approach to the walkouts and coordinated with the students to make the event safe and educational. Cain, much like a member of the NRA congress, acted like a 2 year old and threw a fit promising legislation to punish the schools that acted like adults.

If Cain can’t look like an adult he ought to at least start acting like one.
Briscoe Cain is a Texas State Representative from Deer Park Texas. He enjoys hiking, horse riding, and long walks on the street with a loaded AR-15.
