Gary Gates another rich, Trump loving, Tony Buzbee

January 8, 2020

OMG. It’s Tony Buzbee all over again only worse.

Gary Gates is running for House District 28. Just like Tony Buzbee he is self financing his campaign with over $1 Million as of Dec 31. Like Buzbee he is a Trump loving republican but unlike Buzbee he has some extra ugly baggage. From the Texas Tribune:

Forward Majority’s spot is based on accusations that CPS staffers made against Gates and his wife, Melissa, after the agency removed the couple’s 13 children — 11 adopted — from their Houston-area home in 2000, saying the kids were in “immediate danger.” A few days later, a judge sent the children back home — but he was disturbed by the claims, the Houston Press reported at the time, and emphasized he was only seeking to determine whether the “emergency removal was appropriate, not whether these children have been abused.”

13 children? Besides this latest tidbit, Gates is just one of many republicans buying their way into office. Money Mayes Middleton spent $2.5 Million to win a House seat in Galveston. Kathleen Wall spent $6 Million just to come in 3rd place. She is doing it again in CD22. Others include Angela Paxton, Patrick Fallon, Joan Huffman, Matthew Rinaldi (he quit), Don Huffines, and did I mention Tony Buzbee?

Raising Campaign Cash: Texas Senate

January 8, 2020

Reports are due Jan 15. Updates will follow.

Running for office is not a game. It’s not funny. It’s not cute. It’s serious business. Lives literally depend upon who is elected to represent our State and it takes money. Lots of money. As an example, Beto O’Rourke raised $80 Million (that is and 8 followed by a 0) and still lost. Candidates who do not understand this and does not make the effort to raise the money necessary to get their message to the voters should consider doing something else.

Jack Daniel Foster. Raised $6,957 for the period ending Dec 31, 2019 which includes a loan of $6932 from his own pocket.

Jack should consider a new trade.

Raising Campaign Cash Texas Congressional District 22.

January 8, 2020

Oh brother. There are a boatload of republicans fighting each other for the nomination in Texas Congressional District 22 after Pete Olson quit. Many of them are politically ignorant nobodies and should not be running for any office but that doesn’t stop them from running, they are republicans after all. One in the boat is Douglas Haggard.

Haggard has raised a whopping $10,000 from one donor, himself. For a campaign that will need a million to compete in the primary Haggard has a long way to go.

Walz, Thaddeus also had a very poor showing, actually, no showing since he raised only $20,000 with $13,000 coming from his own pocket.

Republican Diana Miller raised $20,624 with $20,000 coming from her own pocket.

More reports coming as they are filed. The deadline for reports is Jan 15.

Predictions for 2020

December 31, 2019

I’m one of the worst predictors in the world. I’m also one of the worst negotiators especially when buying a car. If you ever want to buy a car for more than sticker price, I’m the one to negotiate for you. I’m worst than Trump in negotiating, but back to predictions for 2020:

Republicans will get wiped out in November. The GOP has been taken over by white wing, politically ignorant, mean, rotten, racist, fiscally irresponsible, gun toting, bible thumping, hypocrites. (did I leave anything out?) There is hatred for this party and rightfully so. There is hatred for their leader, again rightfully so. They will feel this hatred in November. It’s sad. The GOP didn’t use to be like this. They used to be conservative.

Tony Buzbee will not return. After spending $13 million to get his ass kicked the only thing he accomplished was to show who he really was. He started out as a politically ignorant, Trump wannabe. He ended as a politically ignorant loser. It’s sad. He had potential but resorted to acting like Trump. Lets see if he continues to donate money.

Trump will not be removed. At this point, after the evidence has been publicly put on display for the world to see,  the GOP should be having a meeting with Trump urging him to take the honorable route and resign, but that assumes the GOP has an ounce of honor. They don’t. They have an opportunity to remove this cancer from their party and possibly avoid a wipe out in November, but I wouldn’t count on it. Trump has them bent over a table and they are enjoying it.

The wall will not be built. LOL. It never was. It never will. And Mexico is still not paying for it.

We will take CD 22. We have a couple of real good candidates running for CD 22. I have my favorite but both are great candidates. Pete Olson knew it and decided to quit. It’s going to be a great race to watch.

The January State of the Union is going to be a shit show. Speaker Pelosi just has to sit behind Trump to make him sweat. He is going to take 2 hours to whine about everything. Its going to be fun to watch and sad to watch what the Republican Party has become. I expect a few members of congress to walk out this time.

So….buckle up folks. The Beginning of the End of Trump is near.

Raising Campaign Cash: Real Justice PAC

December 30, 2019

I’m not sure how to feel about this besides being very cautious. From Real Justice PAC:

The Real Justice PAC works to elect reform-minded prosecutors at the county and municipal level who are committed to using the powers of their office to fight structural racism and defend our communities from abuse by state power.

That sounds pretty good, but on one hand we have a group, Real Justice PAC, that is funding campaigns for justice reform. This is good. We do need justice reform in our State and in Harris County. On the other hand it’s basically one person and most of the money is out of state.

The reports coming out of the Texas Ethics Commission (TEC), on the surface, doesn’t make any cents. The numbers do not add up. According to the Texas Ethics Commission Real Justice PAC has raised $298,050 with $200,000 coming from one individual, Cari Tuna from San Fransisco. Only $10,200 came from Texans, and only $600 came from Harris County.

Real Justice PAC has spent $425,192 which includes in-kind contributions. $280,000 was donated to Texas Organizing Project PAC, an organization that generally performs great work in the field. Real Justice have donated to three candidates for District Attorney in Bexar, Tarrant, and Harris County.

$54,681 was donated to Albert Roberts running for DA of Tarrant County, $29,444 to Audia Jones running for DA of Harris County, $61,065 to Joe Gonzales running for DA in Bexar County. I didn’t see any donations to the candidate in Travis County. These figures include in-kind donations. For Audia Jones in Harris County the $29,444 account for most of her donations with $24,803 coming from in-kind donations.

So, if I were to make a prediction TOP will endorse these candidates and work for them in the field during the March primary.

Harris County Judge fined $15,000 by the Ethics Commission

December 29, 2019

If you think you do not need to file an Ethics Report, you might want to think. Look what I found in the Texas Ethics Commission website.

In late 2016 Harris County Judge Elaine Palmer was fined $15,000 for not filing required campaign finance reports. According to the Texas Ethics Commission, sworn complaints SC-31606159, SC-31607163, AND SC-31607167

The three sworn complaints allege the respondent did not file six campaign finance reports: the July 2015 semiannual report, the January 2016 semiannual report, the 30-day pre-election report for the March 2016 primary election, the 8-day pre-election report for the March 2016 primary election, the runoff report for the May 2016 primary runoff election, and the July 2016 semiannual report.

A total of SIX reports were not filed. According to the complaint, the reports were eventually filed, up to 1 year late. The fines for not filing a report seem to be pretty steep especially when you are running a low budget campaign which many judicial candidates do. One of Judge Palmer’s report lists less than $7000 in donations. Filing the report late along with the others resulted in fines of $15,000. It just doesn’t make cents.

Palmer is a Judge. She should know the law and she should follow the law. I was hoping someone would have filed in the primary against her but some candidates instead chose to run against Judges who are actually following the law and performing their jobs honorably.

The Judge paid the $15,000 using her campaign funds.

Harris County Constable Diaz draws a challenger: His Cousin.

December 27, 2019
From Linkedin

When another Democrat challenges a Democratic incumbent they need to answer a simple question. Why? Why are you running? What has the incumbent done, or not done to compel you to put your family on hold while you run for office?

Harris County Constable Chris Diaz is in that position with 3 primary challengers, one being a family member, his wife’s cousin. It makes you wonder what Constable Diaz has done wrong enough for his own family member to run against him. His cousin, Jerry Garcia, must know something  about the Constable because he has absolutely no business running for any office.

Jerry doesn’t have a history in law enforcement. At all, as in zero, zip, nada. He has spent a career in safety currently at Bludworth Marine. He also doesn’t have much of a voting record, voting only once in the last ten years. He isn’t politically active, a political unknown. He doesn’t have a treasurer, a website, a Facebook page, or even twitter. He didn’t even post a working number on his application to the Secretary of State.

He is completely unqualified and unprepared to run for Diaz’s job. So maybe during Christmas dinner Diaz might have a chance to look across the table and ask.

Why?

The "Don't be a Dick" bill

December 18, 2019

We have a law against fake videos. We need one for fake endorsements.

During the 2019 elections for Houston City Council Eric Dick, running for At Large 5 position, paid for a mailer that implied Black elected officials in the Houston area endorsed him. On the mailer, Dick was the only white person listed. None of the elected officials endorsed him. None.

The endorsement also came from a group called the Harris County Democratic News (HCDN), not affiliated with the Harris County Democratic Party. The mailer did not have the required disclosure “Political ad paid for by”.

With a little gum shoeing by an obnoxious, insignificant, blogger it was found that HCDN was owned by a friend and client of Eric Dick’s. HCDN was not registered as a PAC but was sending out mailers to influence an election. Unfortunately there was absolutely nothing that Dick’s opponents could do to stop him from doing it again. And he did.

Last legislation session Senate Bill 751 passed that prohibited “fake videos”. Here is the wording:

It’s time for a bill to address fake endorsements. The Republican Party and Eric Dick will do this again. It is sad that a bill must be passed to tell candidates not to lie to voters.
So….looking for a sponsor for the Don’t be a Dick bill.

When you support Trump and lose, you whine

December 17, 2019

Leave it to a trump supporter to whine about losing much like Trump will do in 2020.

Colby Covington is a trump loving UFC fighter. He brags about being on the trump train, wears the MAGA hat, wears the garb. He has met trump in the White House. He hangs around with the trump dummies, Eric and Jr. He shoots his mouth off….until last Saturday night.

At UFC245 Covington got his jaw broken and his ass kicked. He was bloodied, beaten, cut and he ran out of the ring instead of waiting, as customary, to be interviewed. But that still didn’t stop him from doing what a trump does, whine, on twitter, at night.

And even his supporters aren’t having it, again much like trump. This is what bullies do. This is what trump does. They talk big. They act big. And they get their ass kicked. More of this is coming in November.

Houston elections wrap-up 2019

December 16, 2019

Well that wasn’t fun, for some.

The Winners
Mayor Sylvester Turner
Chris Brown Controller

Amy Peck District A
(Delayed) District B
Abbie Kamin District C
Carolyn Evans-Shabazz District D
Dave Martin District E
Tiffany Thomas District F
Greg Davis District G
Karla Cisneros(*) District H
Robert Gallegos District I
Ed Pollard District J
Martha Castex-Tatum District K

Mike Knox At Large 1
David Robinson At Large 2
Mike Kubosh At Large 3
Leticia Plummer At Large 4
Sallie Alcorn At Large 5

The Losers
Tony Buzbee.

Overall
Buzbee lost and that was good for the city. Up till the day of the election Buzbee clearly showed he had no idea of how the City works or how to govern. To him is was about money, his money, and how he could buy a seat. He lost $13 Million. We won. District B is in the courts and will be decided at a later date. Two women joined the members of the At Large delegation. 8, maybe 9 out of 16 members of Council are women. Chris Brown returns as Controller.

Media Bias
Back in 1995 Wayne Dolcefino was an investigative reporter (sic) for KTRK-TV. He had a boner for Sylvester Turner when Turner first ran for Mayor. Dolcefino was eventually sued and lost for a story about insurance fraud and a jury awarded $5.5 Million.

We ought to have an award for those in the media who chased stories that left them with egg on their faces. Fox26 would easily be in the running. They are becoming the FoxNews of Houston. This isn’t good. I used to work with a reporter at Fox26. He was fair and asked the tough questions. That was all I wanted or expected. Professional. Respectable. This is lacking at Fox26 now.

Don’t be a a Dick law.
Eric Dick’s racist mailer cannot go unchallenged. He needs to suffer what ever consequences there may be. Unfortunately the Texas Ethics Commission does not have a rapid response process that would put Dick on notice. Instead a complaint takes months to resolve. We need a “Dont be a Dick” law.

Ed Pollard
Ed can be in the same boat as Dick. Claiming an elected official is endorsing you is dishonest and he should pay some consequences. I hope he does better as an elected official.

Before you run for office
Do yourself and us a favor, think before you jump into a race you know nothing about. We had way too many candidates who could not, would not, raise money and who have no business running for office. This isn’t a game.

Self Financing
There ought to be restrictions on self financing Buzbee put in $13 Million of his own money. Eric Dick put in $300,000. Money Mayes Middleton put in $2.5 Million for a House Race. The list can go on and on. This has to stop.

On to the primaries!
