“They ought to teach this in school”…well CCISD Does! Career & Technical Education

February 28, 2023

In High School I made a cutting board.

I attended the 6th Session of Inside CCISD and once again was very impressed with the education and resources available to students in our schools. Besides preparing kids for college and giving them the tools to help select a university, apply, and pay for the classes CCISD provides a great Career and Technical Education program for those who will enter the workforce right after high school.

The picture to the left is a two seater plane. The students build this from a kit with the adults being responsible for the items required for certification. They will later sell the plane. Across the hall was the automotive repair shop where students work on their own cars or on cars owned by CCISD employees. This includes oil changes and complete break rebuilds among other things. We also toured the Audio/Video workshop. Students are responsible for the video presentations at football games on the big screen, making the videos for the Inside CCISD presentations, and anything the school requires. If you are watching a video at a CCISD school it was probably made by the students. Many of these students work part time in local auto dealers or with the NCAA in helping with on the field photos and videos during games.

Our meeting included a great lasagne dinner not only served by the students but made by the students. CCISD has Culinary Arts classes as part the Hospitality and Tourism career cluster. It was pretty good! These are just a few courses available to students in CCISD.

So if you hear someone say “They ought to bring back teaching of hands on technical skills” tell them to look at the Career & Technical Education provided by CCISD:

Captain Chaos, League City Councilman Justin Hicks, Racist email

February 25, 2023
Captain Chaos

You would think a 13 year veteran of the armed forces would know better. He doesn’t.

In a recent email exchange between League City Councilman Justin Hicks and League City Police Chief Gary Ratliff, Hicks asks the Chief:

“Please tell me that LCPD is committed to hiring officer candidates based on qualifications, NOT skin color.”

Yep. Captain Chaos the Open Records Act can be a pain in a racists ass. the Police Chief responded with basically “What the fuck is wrong with you?”

We are a civil service agency, and we are one of the most strict agencies to get hired with. The requirements to get hired are the same for everyone. I am almost offended that you would insinuate that I would have lesser standards for any group.”

Almost? I’m offended just having to write about this! Luckily Hicks buddy, Mayor Nick Long, came to his defense. “Please excuse Captain Chaos. He is on a mission to piss off as many people as he can.” (Not exactly what he said) He actually said:

“I would not take this question personally.”

LOL. The full email exchange can be found here.

CCISD Trustee Michelle Davis drops out of the race

February 24, 2023

According the the CCISD Elections website Trustee Michelle Davis has dropped out of the race.

We should thank her for her service to the community. I personally didn’t think her heart was in the race and she was hoping another “Conservative” was going to run. Scott Bowen, a current CCISD Trustee, was busy recruiting candidates to run with the support of his party which didn’t include Michelle. I have been told he wasn’t having much luck so Michelle was going to stay in the race.

That changed today. So we are left with Jamieson Mackay and Glencora Rodgers both who are not aligned with any political party and both have good education experience that would be a benefit to the community and CCISD.

So, thank you Trustee Davis for serving.

Texas Ethics Commission hammers two PACs/Treasurers with huge fines

February 24, 2023

Usually ethics complaints filed with the Texas Ethics Commission end in a slap on the wrist, a small fine, an attempt to correct reports, and a promise not to do it again. This latest release of sanctions is about as unusual as the fines against Eric Dick, City of Houston Candidate, who was fined $30,000 last year.

The Texas Ethics Commission issued massive fines against two PACs and treasurers in their recent published orders. The Treasurer of the African American Caucus, Darnella Wilkerson, has been fined $17,500 and Terrance Shanks of the Texas Coalition of Black Democrats Harris County has been fined $27,500. Both must pay the fines within 30 days or will be referred to the Texas Attorney General for collections.

I could find very limited information about the Texas Coalition of Black Democrats Harris County on the TECs campaign finance report website and the African American Caucus is not registered with the TEC. The respondent for the Coalition claims the AAC is a part of the Coalition and therefore the complaints were handled together.

The orders, SC-32107157 and SC-32107163 have been posted to the TECs website. They are long, complicated and intertwined. If you take the time to read the reports the Staff of the TEC claim both respondents misled the commission during their investigation.

Here is a key finding against Darnella Wilkerson:

In consideration of the serious nature of the violations, the circumstantial indications that Wilkerson helped facilitate the still more serious violations in the related complaint against Shanks, and Wilkerson’s bad faith in her response to the complaint, the Commission imposes on Wilkerson civil penalties totaling $17,500: a $15,000 civil penalty for her reporting violations as treasurer of AAC, and an additional $2,500 civil penalty for her failure to respond to Commission staff’s written questions.

And another against Terrance Shanks:

Due to the seriousness of the violations, Shanks’s demonstrated bad faith (in committing the violations at issue, in his response to this sworn complaint, and in his unscrupulous evasion of TCBD-HC’s reporting responsibilities in general), and the need to deter future violations, the Commission imposes on Shanks civil penalties totaling $27,500: a $25,000 civil penalty for the reporting violations found in this Order, and an additional $2,500 civilpenalty for his failure to respond to Commission staff’s written questions.

One of the things you should never do is lie or mislead the Staff of the Ethics Commission. You shouldn’t claim your Treasurer has died when he is alive and well. You should never falsify your documents signed under oath. You should never ignore a request for document supporting your spending/donations. You should never ignore a subpoena or instruct others to ignore a subpoena.

Doing so will unusually end in a massive fine.

Last day to drop out of the CCISD Trustee election. Who will? Who should?

February 24, 2023

Today is the last day to drop out of the CCISD Trustee election. 5 individuals have applied, 3 for District 2 and 2 for District 3.

If Michelle Davis would drop out, the race will be between 2 very good candidates, Glencora Rodgers and Jamison Mackay. I have heard really good things about both of them and the debates would be interesting and very competitive. After one term on the Board Davis has made her mark of following the antics of Scott Bowen. She nominated Bowen for all positions on the board, losing all of them. But something is happening. Bowen has been fishing around looking to back one of the other candidates enticing them with his with his party’s support and unlimited money. So far he has been turned down like a sophomore at a Jr/Sr prom.

If either Glencora or Jamieson drops the race will be a race about contrast between doing what is best for the students, parents, and teachers and what is best for partisan politics.

In District 3 Peter Lauzon really should consider dropping out of the race. He is Scott Bowen’s hand picked candidate who will be flush with outside partisan money. They will spend whatever it will take to get Lauzon on the Board and give the gavel of the President to the Khaos Kid. Lauzon has no business being on the board. He is a highly partisan party candidate and will be nothing more than a Bowen vote. He has shown absolutely no interest in education. He has absolutely no experience in education. He is a UFO, Unfit For Office, and should drop out, and move on supporting his political party.

Running a campaign is tough especially when your heart is not in it for the right reasons. It is stressful on you and your family even more so when partisan politics gets involved in a non-partisan school board race.

Is the Harris County Republican Party dumping Trump?

February 23, 2023
Cartoon By Mr. Fish

This has to hurt.

The HCRP is having their anal “Reagan/Lincoln” dinner later this month. Their keynote speaker? Donald Trump? No. How about Ron “Meatball” DeSantis or Ron “DeSanctimonious”. Yep, Ron DeSantis, the extreme far right, book banning, teacher hating, Disney killer, homophobe, will be the keynote speaker of the Q party.

Trump isn’t even mentioned. It’s pretty clear the party is moving on from the election denying, jackass of a human being, and moving towards another election denying, jackass of a human being, one that might have a chance of winning without whining.

Trump supporters will be left to drive around the George R Brown Center in their trucks with TRUMP flags. A Trump Train while the HCRP is taking a major Trump dump.

LOL. Suck it MAGAts.

Why I switched from AT&T to T-Mobile and haven’t looked back

February 22, 2023

OMG how much can AT&T suck?

Background
I was with AT&T when they were called Houston Cellular with the flip phones, then Southwestern Bell, then finally AT&T. That was decades of loyalty. That ended last year when I moved to T-Mobile and although there are a few hiccups, I haven’t been happier.

I had Uverse TV, AT&T Internet (only 50mps) and 4 cell phones with unlimited text, data, and calls. I now have T-Mobile Cell service with unlimited texts, calls, and data. T-Mobile paid off the balance of my phones. I have T-Mobile 5G Home Internet which is at 300 mps and I have YouTube TV. T-Mobile pays for my Netflix and gave me Paramount+ and Apple TV for a year.

Comparing Costs
With AT&T my TV and Internet service was just fine. It did everything I expected it to do which is connect to the Internet for email and browsing and let me stream movies. Cell phone coverage was fine and pretty much free from problems. For all of this I was paying $420/month.

After I switched to T-Mobile and YouTube TV I am now paying $260. $177 for T-Mobile Cell and Internet and $83 for YouTube which includes $14 for HBOMax. Total savings of $160/month.

Comparing Customer Service
What is the difference? Customer service. When I call T-Mobile a person answers in about 2 minutes, takes my info, then forwards the info to someone who will solve my problem. They are local to Atlanta, Georgia and have been excellent the few times I needed them. With AT&T I once was on hold for over 3 hours and then they hung up on me, multiple times. This wasn’t a one time event, it was multiple times. It was the most frustrating, cussing, yelling experiences I ever had in my life. T-Mobile is just so much better.

Comparing Service
T-Mobile has its issues as did AT&T. My service in Blanco Texas when I have a cabin is spotty, but adequate. There are a couple of dead zones in the area although I haven’t really noticed much. Internet service is much faster than AT&T and less expensive. YouTube TV provides all the channels I need, in fact way to many and even with the additional services of Netflix (paid for the T-Mobile) and HBOMax it is still very inexpensive. The user interface needs to improve but I am happy with them. I no longer have to rent AT&T equipment and handle an extra remote. YouTube TV requires only the TV remote and it syncs with my surround sound system automatically.

Bottom Line
The bottom line is that I am saving $160 and I am getting better service and better customer service. What can possibly go wrong?

How to campaign for CCISD Trustee without breaking the law

February 22, 2023

It’s really not that hard.

Pictured to the left is Eric Dick, former Harris County Department of Education Trustee. Dick violated the laws governing campaign finance reporting. After a 2 year investigation he was fined $30,000 and referred to the Texas Bar. If you are running for CCISD Trustee, or are a Treasurer for a candidate, don’t be a Dick. (you can read about Dick here)

In the last election two candidates spent a very large sum of money in their race for Trustee. Scott Bowen spent $20,000, 5 times more than his opponent and did not receive over 50% of the vote. Misty Dawson spent $8000 and lost. These totals do not included the money spent by Harris County Republican Party, which is believed to be $14,000.

Reporting campaign donations and expenditures should be easy especially in a school board race. Unfortunately with the unlimited special interest money coming from the extreme right wing of the Republican Party it can become complicated and ripe for an ethics complaint. Here are some tips to help you avoid having an ethics violation filed against you and your treasurer.

  • Report donations and expenditures correctly. It really is easy. Follow the instructions of the Ethics Committee. Include the amount, the name of the donor/recipient, address. Don’t hide donations. Don’t hide expenditures. You will get caught.
  • Don’t use your donations for personal items. When caught you may have to pay a fine as well as return the money to your campaign. Your donors money is for your campaign not for lunch or your trip to Heartbreakers. (Local State Representative John Davis spent $1500 of his donors money on a pair of cowboy boots. He eventually was fined and had to return the money to his campaign.)
  • Don’t lie. (I know this is hard for some of you) Do not falsify your campaign finance report. Do not lie about the origins of donations. You will be caught. When a complaint is filed against you, don’t lie to the Commission.
  • In all literature include the “Political Ad paid for by …….”. This is required in all literature. Simply tell who paid for the mailer or door hanger or who paid for your paid block walkers.
  • Be careful of using kids in your literature. If you are going to pose with kids you might want to get their parents permission. That may not be a violation of campaign finance laws but it might end up in a civil court or a well deserved butt kicking.

The Texas Ethics Commission has a number of guides to help you file your reports, run your campaign legally, and keep your and your treasurer from paying fines. Remember, don’t be a Dick.

Texas is #1 in mass shootings! #ThoughtsAndPrayers

February 20, 2023

No Place but Texas. Literally.

Texas Republicans are very proud of being #1 in unlimited access to guns. They love their guns and letting anyone dress like GI Joe or a cop with loaded assault weapons, body armor, and silencers. This is who they are.

Texas is #1 in mass shootings overtaking California starting in 2015. In just a month we have had 2 mass shootings, the latest in Allan Texas at a shopping mall leaving 8 dead including a 5 year old boy. Prior to that it was the shooting in Cleveland Texas leaving 5 dead including a 9 year old boy.

Greg Abbott claims the shooting in Allen was an “unspeakable tragedy” which is total bullshit. It was an avoidable tragedy. Abbott doesn’t need to offer thoughts and prayers, instead he should offer an apology to the families of the dead and to the families of the victims that will require care for the rest of their lives. This is Abbott’s fault for not taking action to curb gun violence after the killing of 27 Christians at a church, or the 10 students killed at Santa Fe, or the 21children killed in Uvalde or the 5 immigrants killed in Cleveland.

The death of these folks in Allen Texas is Greg Abbott’s fault and the fault of every goddamn elected official who refuses to take action to curb gun violence.
