Harris County Dept of Education Trustee fined $40,000 by Ethics Commission

October 4, 2023

What the hell is happening at the Dept of Education?

I filed two ethics complaints against former candidate for City Council Eric Dick. I truly expected a slap on the wrist, a small fine, and a promise from Dick to not do it again. Instead he received a record fine of $30,000, which he has not paid since 2021 and another $10,000 just last week.

The Ethics Commission rarely fines anyone $10,000 much less $30,000. The largest fine ever imposed was against former Harris County Commissioner Jerry Eversole for $75,000. Eversole is now (or was) a paid lobbyist for the Harris County Department of Education. WTF?

Yesterday the Houston Chronicle wrote about Dick’s latest fine. The first line took me by surprise:

Attorney and Harris County Department of Education Trustee Eric Dick faces $40,000 in fines for campaign finance violations after the Texas Ethics Commission recently tacked on another $10,000 penalty.

Dick is a Trustee with HCDE? Turns out Dick was going to run for one of the HCDE positions after he lost his race for Harris County Treasurer. He filed an assignment of treasurer in May of 2022 then pulled out in July. But….the Trustees appointed Dick to an empty seat in January of 2023! So the two elected officials with the two top fines by the Texas Ethics Commission now works, or worked, for the Harris County Department of Education.

Wow. In the words of George W. Bush: Rarely do we ask, is our children learning?

Another letter to State Rep Dennis Paul. You are killing your own

October 3, 2023

I’ve written to Paul before after he contributed to the death of another young State Republican Executive Committee member. It’s sad that I have to do it again.

The Honorable Dennis Paul
P.O. Box 2910
Austin, Texas 78768

Representative Paul,

You did it again. I am sorry to hear about the passing of a young Republican Activist, Grace Jones. As you know she was a 35 year old, State Republican Executive Committee member and was shot by her husband in a murder-suicide. She leaves behind 3 young children without a mother or father. As with Mr. Scott Apley, another SREC member that died from COVID, you should be apologizing to these children for your lack of action on gun safety to prevent this senseless killing. You and your party are responsible for her death and you should be asking for forgiveness from your god.

You enjoy providing more protection for your guns than for your own members. The death of this young lady is on your hands. Instead of offering worthless thoughts and prayers you should offer an apology to what’s left of her family and to the countless families who have lost their loved ones due to senseless gun violence because of your cowardness. I am truly ashamed of you.

May God have mercy on you. If you find a pair, give me a call. We can have lunch and discuss.

John Cobarruvias

Texas GOP mourn the loss of a young conservative after contributing to her death

October 3, 2023

This is sad and avoidable.

The Texas Republican Party mourned the loss of a young conservative activist. From CBS News:

“Words are difficult to express the feelings we have at the moment. Our heart goes out to Grace’s family, especially to her three children still at home, who are now left parentless. The best option we have at this time is fervent prayer for peace that surpasses our understanding,” said Matt Rinaldi, Chairman of the Republican Party of Texas.

Greg Abbott also offered his useless thoughts and prayers in the Midland Reporter-Telegram:

“Cecilia and I offer our heartfelt condolences to the family of Grace Jones, a wonderful mother, patriot and Texas Republican leader. … Forever grateful for her work on my campaign and her leadership in the conservative movement. … May God bless her and her family.”

Grace Jones was only 35 years old. She was a member of the State Republican Executive Committee (SREC). She had 3 children. Her husband shot her and then shot himself. They were going through a divorce. Abbott and the GOP have created a 2nd Amendment sanctuary in Texas providing more protection for their guns than for their own. They have resisted red flag laws or any gun laws that could have prevented this tragedy. Abbott once again has blood on his hands.

Republicans are quick to offer thoughts and prayers even if they are responsible for the death of someone in their own party. Case in point right here in Clear Lake, State Representative Dennis Paul took to the House floor to offer his worthless comments after another SREC member died of COVID. Paul let his friend, David Apley, a Dickinson City Council Member, shoot his mouth off about COVID “hoax” and he died from it. My letter to Paul:

Your party has failed Mr Apley by allowing misinformation to be spread by your members. Your party has failed over 53,000 families in the state by not taking this pandemic seriously. You allowed members of your party, “conservative” leaders in the community, and elected officials, such as Mr. Apley to mock science, downplay the severity of the virus, spread rumors, and fight every move by every elected official to stop this deadly virus in its track. You, personally failed Mr. Apley.

So fuck you Abbott, Paul, and the GOP. You helped kill this young lady.

To stop illegal immigration go after those who hire them

October 3, 2023

It shouldn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out how to stop illegal immigration and we all know Houston has a lot of rocket scientists. Unfortunately, after decades of a broken immigration system there is no end in sight and no political will to end or at least curb illegal immigration. This lack of courage has resulted in inhumane treatment of immigrants legally entering the United States and posses of hillbillies patrolling the border. But there is a more effective way.

Elected officials are attacking this problem at the border when they should be focusing on why these illegal immigrants come to the United States in the first place, to make money. Those entering the US at the port of entry seeking asylum from violence in their own country must surrender at the border and submit to a long, broken process. Allowing immigrants to legally enter our country is governed by an international treaty which the United States signed back in 1951. This process must be fixed, or else elected officials will continue to abuse those seeking help from their fellow human beings.

Those entering the country illegally or those who enter on a work VISA but overstay are here to make a living. Many cross the border knowing they have someone, a family member, or a friend, already in the country and have a possibility of being hired by a homebuilder, restaurant owner, or other business. Once in the country and employed these immigrants will lay low, stay out of trouble, blend in, do their job and make money. Their employees reap the benefits of their hard work and skills while looking the other way when calls for immigration reform are being made.

Business owners across the State have called for comprehensive immigration reform, many signing to an op-ed in August 2006, titled “Pass Immigration Reform”. Those signing this op-ed included home builders, restaurant owners, car dealers, chicken processor owners and others. This call fell on deaf ears and for good reason. Immigration has been used as a campaign issue for decades. There is no political will to solve this problem by the elected officials these business owners contribute to because it’s what they campaign on to be re-elected. So, it is up to others to solve this. Here is a snippet of their op-ed:

Think for a minute about one Texas sector that relies heavily on immigrant workers: construction. A typical Texasconstruction worker earns more than $50,000 a year if he regularly works overtime. Employers say they do everythingthey can to attract native-born workers. But few young Americans want to do hard physical labor, particularly in ourclimate. And in the less-skilled construction trades — masonry, concrete, drywall, tile — more than 80 percent of Texas’workforce is Latino.

Instead of attacking this problem at the border take the fight to those who have enticed these immigrants to come and stay here. Maybe the hillbilly posses should dress up like GI Joe and walk the streets of the new home builder construction sites looking for the illegal immigrants the builders have hired, providing jobs that are being taken away from hard working Americans. Simply focusing on one homebuilder that has political clout could bring their construction to a halt until the builder demands immigration reform. In Texas walking the streets with loaded assault weapons dressed like immigration enforcement is legal and would get the attention of those who are here illegally, those who are laying low, staying out of trouble, blending in, doing their job, and making money.

This process would make it easy for self-proclaimed immigration officials to monitor home builders, restaurant owners, car dealers, and chicken processor owners right in the comfort of their own neighborhoods. There will be no need to travel to the border and spend money on housing and food when they could simply go home after a day of work monitoring their local homebuilder, protecting America, and looking for illegal workers.

It’s a win-win for everyone. /sarcasm

OTD in 1835 they actually took the Come and Take It cannon.

October 2, 2023

It’s now a bell. Seriously.

So…back in the early days of the Texas Revolution settlers were invited to Mexico (what is now Texas). They asked that they learn the language, become Catholics, and populate the land. And they did, sort of.

Mexico gave the settlers in Gonzales Texas a cannon to help them defend themselves against the Native Americans. When Mexico figured out that the settlers were considering stealing the land that Mexico stole from the Native Americans they sent a squad of 5 soldiers to retrieve the cannon. The forces at Gonzales refused to surrender the cannon and put the soldiers in prison.

Mexico then sent a couple of hundred soldiers. A small skirmish ensued but they eventually retreated without the cannon. Gonzales eventually took the cannon to The Alamo (big mistake) where the Texans were massacred and their bodies burned. The cannon was buried at the Alamo and dug up in 1852. A second, smaller, cannon was used at the battle of Gonzales. That one is in a museum in Gonzales. What happened to the “Come and Take It” cannon?

According to the Texas State Historical Association:
It was unearthed by Samuel Maverick in 1852, and sent to New York by his widow Mary Maverick in 1874, where it was recast into a bell that hangs in the belfry of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in San Antonio.

So. There. It’s a bell. A fuckin bell. They came. They took it.

On her first day back Judge Lina Hidalgo should resign

October 1, 2023

I hate to write this.

I’ve been a Democrat ever since 1992. I’ve been involved with the party for over 30 years so it deeply pains me to call for the resignation of Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo.

Hidalgo entered politics in 2018 with an upset victory over Judge Ed Emmett by the sim margin of only 1000 votes. I was skeptical of her lack of political or elected experience especially when running against Emmett, who was very experienced, knowledgeable, and performed honorably. It was his race to lose, and he did. He took the 29-year-old, inexperienced candidate too lightly and lost.

Hidalgo, within months of her inauguration was faced with significant challenges including the freeze of 2021, the chemical tank fires near Deer Park, and especially the COVID pandemic. In every instance she handled the challenges with leadership and poise. During the pandemic Hidalgo provided what was sorely missing from elected officials at the state and federal level, she acted like an adult. She took action to protect Houstonians by shutting down the rodeo to prevent the spread of the virus. She took tremendous criticism from the public for it especially those who make a living at the rodeo. It was a difficult, but right decision. When our county desperately needed leadership, she stood up and led.

In those few months she proved to those who doubted her, including me, that she was up to the job of running the 3rd largest county in the entire United States. In 2022 she won re-election even though being challenged with legal issues concerning COVID funding. District Attorney Kim Ogg’s, political sniping didn’t help. Ogg on several occasions has made headlines on issues that should have been handled behind the scenes and like adults. She contributed to the sometimes-bumpy road by her baseless investigation concerning voting fraud in the 2022 election. Hidalgo has had other minor issues concerning her relationships with her peers which she tends to express publicly in a not so helpful manner.

Hidalgo has since been out of the office to address a mental health issue. As anyone who has experienced depression, including me, it can slowly creep up on you and can have horrible consequences if left untreated. Hidalgo should be commended for taking that step to address the issue and seek the help she needed. She is now expected to return to the office on October 2.

On October 2 her first agenda item should be to stand up and step down as County Judge. I ask that she consider this for the sake of all her constituents in Harris County. Over the last few months we have suffered enough especially after the 2022 elections. Hidalgo beat her opponent, Alexandra Mealer by over 18,000 votes even after being out spent 5 to 1. Mealer’s donors spent nearly $10 Million dollars trying to oust her and failed. Mealer eventually conceded but on the last day to file a challenge to the election, the election denier came through with a frivolous lawsuit whining about losing the election. She has since dropped her suit.

This constant whining by Mealer, her supporters, and every election denier that yells “RIGGED!” needs to stop and the only way that can happen is for Lina Hidalgo to resign. The citizens of Harris County can then crown Mealer as the new Judge. We can put a pretty tiara on her head, present her a beautiful golden scepter, and give her a much-deserved participation trophy. We can have a parade for her with honorees like Ted Cruz, Mattress Mac, and the entire Republican Party. And the whining would stop.

For the love of all that is holy, Judge Hidalgo, please do us a huge favor and resign so we don’t have to hear Mealer and her whiny little bitches whine anymore.

Welcome to Satire Sunday.

Who filed the frivolous lawsuit against Judge Lina Hidalgo this time?

September 30, 2023

There is a League City connection.

Well leave it to the Republican Party to continue running to the court house filing more lawsuits because they lost an election. Recently Alexandra Mealer dropped her frivolous suit against Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo. Even her attorneys were not happy with her. Now three plaintiffs are suing to remove Hidalgo from office even though she is scheduled to return on Monday. So who are these folks? Glad you asked.

Dave Wilson. Dave is one of those “Run for something” guys. Once he won running as a Black man. Literally. KHOU has that story. “The mailers featured “smiling African-American faces — which he readily admits he just lifted off websites — and captioned with the words, ‘Please vote for our friend and neighbor Dave Wilson'” over 24-year incumbent Bruce Austin. He won in the heavily black district by just 26 votes.”

Thomas Thrash. I can’t find anything about him on the world wide inter webs besides his property in Katy.

Thomas A. Bazan. He is listed as a Lead Testing & Removal Specialist living in Jersey Village. He is also a republican precinct chair.

Milinda M. Morris. Oh this is a doozy. Milinda was a failed candidate for Texas Senate losing by 60 points. (not a typo). She is also a member of the State Republican Executive Committee.

Tom Slocum Jr. Another doozy. Ran for Railroad Commissioner and won 14% of the vote. Graduated from Texas A&M. I wonder if he is related to Coach Slouch of A&M Football?

Keith A. Gross. The League City connection is the attorney who filed the misspelled suit, Keith A. Gross Texas Bar No. 24027357. He is a former City Council Member. You might want to check out his Yelp reviews.

The suit itself, which can be found here, is in dire need of a spell check. Hidalgo is not HILDAGO. Katy Texas is not KATEY. The suit references Texas Penal Code 22.041. What is Texas Penal Code 22.041? Glad you asked:

Texas Penal Code 22.041 Abandoning or Endangering Child. An offense under Texas Penal Code § 22.041(b) is a felony of the second degree if the alleged offender abandons the child under circumstances that a reasonable person would believe would place the child in imminent danger of death, or bodily injury, or physical or mental impairment.

Local Facebook Attorney stated “What a frivolous load of crap. These whiny little bitches just need to shut the fuck up and move on.”

Another $10,000 Ethics fine for Eric Dick, republican candidate

September 30, 2023

This is weird. Just plain weird.

Bear with me for a bit of background. In 2019 Eric Dick ran for Houston City Council. I filed a complaint via the Texas Ethics Commission against Dick for not disclosing the cost of a mailer he sent for the election. The headline from the Houston Chronicle says it all about the result of that complaint: “Houston Republican fined $30K for mailers suggesting Black Democrats endorsed him“. The TEC also referred him to the State Bar. You can read the details here. Trust me. It’s long, but interesting!

Years later Dick decided to run for Harris County Treasurer. He lost in the primary but didn’t disclose $50,000 in donations from the extreme white wing group called Conservative Republicans of Texas. CRT was founded by Steve Hotze who was recently indicted on multiple felonies concerning voting fraud. His side kick, Jared Woodfill, is the president. Dick also failed to disclose over $100,000 in expenditures. So I filed another complaint.

Just like the previous complaint I expected the TEC is issue a small fine and Dic would promise not to do it again and just like the previous complaint that didn’t happen. Dick was fined $10,000 which is a pretty big fine by the TEC. The TEC wasn’t very happy with Dick, again:

The respondent has also acted in bad faith with Commission staff throughout the sworn complaint process. He not only ignored the Commission’s repeated attempts over the course of many months to contact him regarding the complaint, but when he finally submitted his response it was over eight months late.

Dick has since changed his long time Treasurer, has dropped out of the race for Harris County Department of Education, and has a new attorney representing him, Jared Woodfill. Dick has agreed to the Agreed Resolution.

As of today Dick has not paid the $30,000 fine. You can read the entire resolution here.

Houston Chronicle endorsement watch: At-Large 4

September 29, 2023

Another great (and easy) endorsement from the Chronicle.

The Chronicle gives way too much credit to Plummer’s challengers. All three shouldn’t be running unless they intend to be serious about running. As I have said before: There are four candidates for At-Large 4. Only one is serious. Let’s weed out the non-contenders. Roy Morales. He runs for anything.
Andrew “Drew” Patterson. Can’t find anything about him. John Branch. Has raised little money or interest.
The Chronicle highlighted their strong points even though they are not serious politicians. Bless their hearts.

From the Chronicle:

Plummer’s willingness to keep an open mind in a political climate where many elected leaders are content to operate in silos and echo chambers is a refreshing trait. She is both an independent advocate for the city and willing to be a check on the mayor. Plummer deserves a second term.

Trump to headline a white supremacist fundraiser in Dallas

September 29, 2023

No Place But Texas. Literally.

Twice impeached, four time indicted, former president Donald Trump will travel to Dallas to headline a fundraiser for a group of white supremacists. 16 white supremacist sympathizers are organizing a fundraiser including Congressman Troy Nehls of Richmond who, as County Sheriff, was known for targeting Mexican Americans on the highways and former Congressman Louie Gohmert who coined the phrase “Terror babies” claiming terrorist were coming to the United States to raise children who would later become terrorists.

Other sponsors include white supremacist sympathizers Congressman Brian Babin, Congressman Randy Weber, Congressman Ronny Jackson, Attorney General Ken Paxton and Lt Governor Dan Patrick.

According to the organizer: “We are very excited that our white supremacist in chief, Donald Trump, has agreed to attend to raise much needed funds for us white racist folk. No one is more supportive of the white racists of the Republican Party than Donald Trump!”

Doors open at 6:00 PM. Oath Keepers and Proud Boys receive free admission. No Nazis please. We have our limits.
