TX Senator Ted Cruz bringing home the Canadian bacon

September 20, 2018

Ted Cruz just can’t stop saying stupid things to fire up his base. He has adopted his presidents methods of name calling and resorting to lies and exaggerations. It’s all he has at this point.

He claimed his opponent Congressman Beto O’rouke was going to bring tofu to Texas, even though the soybean industry is thriving in Texas. He ridiculed those with colored hair including his wife who…colors her hair…and is a vegetarian. He even questioned bringing silicon production to Texas.  (Or was it silicone?)
He is now making ill advised statements about Beto banning barbecue. This coming from Ted Cruz, born and raised in Canada. The only thing Cruz should be talking about is bacon. Canadian bacon. From the Washington Post Ted said:

“I’ve got to say, they summed up the entire election,” Cruz told the crowd inside the restaurant. “If Texas elects a Democrat, they’re going to ban barbecue across the state.”

And the crowd wasn’t sure if he meant it or not. Ted should stick to pizza. With mushrooms, jalepenos, and Canadian bacon.

Morons.

Nothing is too low for Pete Olson and Fort Bend Republicans

September 20, 2018

Following in the footsteps of their lord and savior, Donald J. Trump, Texas Congressman Pete Olson and the Fort Bend Republic Party has stooped to a new low in reaching out to the Hindu American voters. From the Hindu American Foundation:

Houston, TX (September 18, 2018) — The Hindu American Foundation today called upon the Fort Bend County Republican Party to clarify its intentions regarding the use of Lord Ganesha in an ad urging support of the Republican Party.

The ad appeared to be an attempt to reach out to Hindus on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi and urged Hindu American voters in the county to vote Republican by asking “Would you worship a donkey or an elephant? The choice is yours.”

This leaves a number of questions on the table, one being: Why is Pete and the republic party reaching out to Hindu Americans? They never have before. Maybe it’s because Olson is being challenged by Sri Preston Kulkarni one of the most qualified candidates running for Congress. Don’t believe me, go read his bio. Sri is giving Pete all he can handle and his party has made a mistake in their outreach.

Can you imagine if the Democratic Party reached out to Christians with a reference to Joseph and Mary riding a donkey and not an elephant? Neither can I because mixing religion and political ads is just an incredibly stupid idea.

The second question is: How low will they go? We haven’t seen bottom for the republic party in Texas. Fort Bend is just catching up. There is no bottom to what they will say or do to feed their base of politically ignorant, lying, bunch of racists.
Just like their president.

Why #NoBodyLikesTedCruz. Again

September 18, 2018

Ted Cruz makes it hard to like Ted Cruz.

His latest stunt wasn’t just deceiving, one State Representative believes it violated Texas law. Cruz mailed a fundraising letter which looked on the surfaces as a summons. He could have sent a letter with a picture of him standing in the Senate shutting down the government, or maybe a picture of him defending his wife from Trump, but instead he used a method of deception. Many of us can smell a rat an envelope away but others may be fooled into opening this solicitation. From the Austin Statesman:

“Received this for my 88-year-old grandma,” Owen said in his post, which also shared a photo of the envelope. “Says it’s a summons from Travis County, but is actually for money for @tedcruz. Did your campaign authorize this? Is this even legal? Shame on you. That’s one more @BetoORourke voter.”

According to State Representative Gene Wu this solicitation may violate the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act:

“A person commits an offense if the person recklessly causes to be delivered to another any document that simulates a summons, complaint, judgment or other court process with the intent to: (1) induce payment of a claim from another person; or (2) cause another to: (A) submit to the putative authority of the document; or (B) take any action or refrain from taking any action in response to the document, in compliance with the document, or on the basis of the document,” the statute states.

Representative Wu’s comment on the summons letter adequately sums up why #NobodyLikesTedCruz:  “this still absolutely violates the spirit of the law. And even if it doesn’t violate the spirit of the law, this is slimy as hell.”

Loaning Campaign Cash: Texas Rep Matthew D. Rinaldi

September 15, 2018

Texas Representatie Matthew D. Rinaldi joins other republicans in Texas who believe in buying a seat at the table. He shares the table with Kathleen Wall, Angela Paxton, State Representative Dennis Paul, State Senator Don Huffines, David Mays Middleton, and State Senator Joan Huffman.

Representative Rinaldi, elected in 2012 has raised over $900,000 (post coming soon). He has loaned his campaign about $250,000, over 25% of this total haul. He has a $100,000 loan balance and a Cash on Hand of $256,000. In July of 2015 he loaned himself $100,000 to raise his COH to $272,000. 6 months later he paid his loan off leaving a COH balance of $122,000. It’s as if he was padding his COH balance.

Needless to say, Rinaldi is wealthy enough to pad his COH balance. He is a Representative from House District 115 in the Farmers Branch area. He is being challenged by Julie Johnson in the general election. Johnson doesn’t need loans for her race. She has a COH balance of over $200,000. BTW:

Bennett Ratliff, a Republican who preceded Matt Rinaldi as state representative for House District 115 in Dallas County, on Friday endorsed Rinaldi’s Democratic opponent, Julie Johnson, in the Nov. 6 election.

in 2017 Rinaldi was listed as one of the worst legislators in Texas by Texas Monthly.

He called Immigration and Customs Enforcement to report that some of the protesters in the gallery were undocumented immigrants. Then he walked over to a group of Latino legislators and taunted them about his call to ICE. This seemed exactly the kind of racial profiling that Hispanic lawmakers had feared. The resulting shoving match was predicable. We won’t try to parse whether Rinaldi had legitimate cause to fear for his safety. But we do know that he escalated the incident when he threatened to put a bullet in the head of Democrat Poncho Nevárez. The Democrats weren’t blameless, but Rinaldi was the instigator. His conduct embarrassed himself, the House, and Texas.

Tales from phone banking

September 14, 2018

For those who are working to elect Democrats to restore sanity to Congress, here is what you can expect from calling potential voters.

Make a few hundred phone calls to potential voters to push your candidate or to encourage voting and you will hear a number of responses ranging from virtual hugs to a kick in the what nots. Knowing these types of responses and what to do when you encounter them can encourage you to make another call or stay another hour.

Thank you for calling. Some will thank you for taking your time to volunteer for the candidate. If you ever receive a call from a volunteer you should do the same. Phone banking isn’t just sitting around talking on the phone, although that is actually what it is, but it is hard work. Depending upon your targets it may be very tough calling independent voters to convince them to vote for your candidate. These “thank you” calls are good calls. They energize you.

Take me off your list. These usually ends up with a click. Remember you need to feel sorry for these folks. It is clear they can’t act like a human being and say something like “Can you please remove me from your list?” or at the very least just hang up. Bless their hearts.

Hang up. Years ago when someone would hang up without even saying “Can you please remove me from your list?” I would call back and hang up on them. (I was reprimanded many times) Don’t do that. Just move on to the next call. Do NOT call them back and hang up.

Not interested. There are still people who will say “Not interested”. With the country on fire you will still find people who will take the time to pull their heads out of their butt to say “Not interested”. Hang up on them before they hang up on you.

I’m a Republican. There are still people who will say “I’m a republican”. With the country on fire you will still find people who will take the time to pull their heads out of their butt to say “I’m a republican”. Hang up. Laugh. Move on.

I wouldn’t vote for… Every now and then you will get a MAGAt on the phone who sits by the phone waiting to pounce on a volunteer with “I wouldn’t vote for that socialist yada yada yada…”. As their blood pressure rises let them rant a bit then say “Hello? Hello? Are you there?”. Then hang up. Imagine them sitting there waiting for the next call.

Thanks for taking your time to volunteer for your candidates, your party, and your country!

Why #NobodyLikesTedCruz

September 12, 2018

Ask yourself this: If you had a choice to travel across the country in a Fiat with either Ted Cruz or Beto O’rourke who would you choose?

Nobody likes Ted Cruz. Even members of his own party don’t like Ted Cruz and for good reason. Ted is one of those guys that are just hard to listen to. He talks as if everyone is sitting on the edge of their seats waiting for him to complete a sentence full of awkward pauses confusing people on when to either clap, get up and leave, or cut their ears off. Here are a just a few reasons why #NobodyLikesTedCruz.

He won’t defend his own family. Donald Trump called his wife a dog face causing Ted to go on a tirade:

“It’s not easy to tick me off,” Cruz said. “I don’t get angry often. But you mess with my wife, you mess with my kids, that’ll do it every time. Donald, you’re a sniveling coward. Leave Heidi the hell alone.”

Yet months later he sucked up to Trump as if he never said anything. Even his wife, Heidi, hasn’t forgiven Trump. How can you trust someone like Ted Cruz to defend your family when he won’t even defend his own?

He wants to cut coverage for pre-existing conditions. Lucky for Ted and his family, his tax funded healthcare policy covers pre-existing conditions. Always has. Always will. And you pay for it. So as I said, how can you trust Ted Cruz with the health care of your kids? You can’t. Once he is successful your family will not be covered while his family will. Sleep well.

He’s from Canada. Unlike his opponent, Ted was born and raised in Canada as Raphael Ed Cruz, or as Canadians call him “Ted”. Aye. Once he was recently outed, Ted quickly denounced his dual citizenship. He won’t defend his family or his citizenship.

He shutdown the government. It was all about Ted Cruz. Cruz took to the Senate floor to filibuster and shutdown the government because the Affordable Care Act was helping people stay well. He read Green Eggs & Ham. Even his own party was tired of him and did not support the shutdown, but like the cowards they are did nothing to stop it.

It’s all about Ted. It’s hard to believe a thing Ted says. You have to wonder when he makes a statement about a situation if he is truly concerned or is he thinking 2 steps ahead trying to make the situation all about him. Everything Ted does is for Ted and his achieving the high throne.

There are so many other reasons why #NobodyLikesTedCruz. Personally I can’t imagine driving across the country listening to Ted Cruz signing along to ABBA.

Why do you have to be a dick about everything: Tx Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller

September 11, 2018

Don’t you have anything better to do than tweet or read Facebook?

As the Houston Chronicle pointed out Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller, once again, used social media for a racist attack on an African American. From the Chronicle:

AUSTIN — Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller liked a comment on his Facebook page that called for getting “a rope” to handle his Democratic opponent, Kim Olson, and an African-American U.S. Senator in an apparent reference to lynching.

Yes. Lynching and this is not Sid Miller’s first rodeo. As you may remember Miller was criticized for calling Secretary Clinton the C word back in 2016. Calling a woman the C word usually results in getting fired, removed from office, or your ass kicked. Miller later issued an apology:

I went on to raise horses and ride in the rodeo. I was considered just an ole, simple minded, Christian, country bumpkin with a hat bigger than my head. Unfortunately this continues to this day resulting in my unfortunate use of the word C*** when referring to a female politician. For this I apologize.

In the future I will work to uphold the laws of the State, the word of the Lord, and the wisdom of family values and will use other words like bitch or whore.

Sid Miller isn’t fit to be a rodeo clown much less an elected official. Instead of tweeting and being a racist on Facebook he should be spending time doing hid damn job. He has become the rodeo clown of the Texas republic party acting like a racist asshole, much like his mentor Donald Trump. For this we have to ask “Why do you have to be a dick about everything?”.

Teacher Tuesday in Clear Lake with Mike Collier

September 10, 2018

If you are in the public education field in the Clear Lake area you might consider coming to hear Mike Collier who is running to replace Lt Governor Dan Patrick. Mike will be speaking at 7:30 PM (sharp) and will be taking questions from the audience.

Dan Patrick has been one of the worst Texas legislators when it comes to public education. Under his time in government, teacher salaries have been stagnant, healthcare insurance have skyrocketed for retired teachers, and massive cuts to education have been used to pay for business tax cuts. Patrick has made it a priority to privatize our public education system with “school vouchers”. Patrick has become so toxic to those in education they attempted to remove him in the primary taking 25% of the vote. From the Houston Chronicle:

Patrick vows to pursue these vicious [school] vouchers “session after session after session.” Despite six “no” votes from our Republican legislature. Despite the defeat of the bill again during the special session. Despite the difference in cost. Despite the basic flaw in voucher logic.

Mike will be speaking at the monthly meeting of the Bay Area Democratic Movement. We will have a great dinner of Chicken Fried Rice, Egg Rolls, Salad and deserts followed by our meeting at 7:30. Bring your friends and other educators

Tuesday Sept 11th 7:00 Social and dinner. 7:30 Meeting
Krist Law Firm
17100 El Camino Real
Houston, 77058

Mike Collier started his career at Exxon, but soon found his way to PriceWaterhouseCoopers – one of the biggest accounting firms in the world, with tens of thousands of employees. He served in the audit practice for 10 years, eventually becoming a top aide to the PwC World Chairman. Finally, he served in Houston as a Partner for ten years, leading a team of two dozen professionals providing due diligence, structuring, and valuation services to some of PwC’s largest and most sophisticated energy clients. Then, Mike helped build a successful Texas oil company, serving as its CFO.

TX Senator @TedCruz loses the fake boob vote

September 10, 2018

You just can’t make this up. Really. I’m not making this up.

During one of his old white folks campaign stops Ted Cruz decided to target another set of people just like trump does. Unfortunately Cruz isn’t as good as trump when it comes to insults. From CNN:

“We are seeing tens of millions of dollars flooding into the state of Texas from liberals all over the country who desperately want to turn the state of Texas blue,” Cruz said. “They want us to be just like California, right down to tofu and silicon and dyed hair.”

From Huffington Post

Silicon? Really? Soybeans? Tofu is made from soybeans and product that is grown in Texas. The producers have been hammered due to tariffs imposed by Ted’s buddy in the White House. Tofu is also very popular in major cities across Texas. If Cruz had visited these cities over the last 6 years he might know this.

If Cruz had attended a republican fundraiser he would also know that staring at fake boobs then making fun of them might not be the best idea for his campaign. There is so much silicone in his own party it’s a wonder how there are any leaks coming from the White House at all. As Cruz said:

“As a conservative Texan I occasionally enjoy a face full of delicious tofu and big breasteses.”

Ok. I made that up.

It's Beto "Beh-toh"

September 9, 2018

It’s not Bee-toe or Bee-do or Beh-do. It is Beh-toh.

My dad had a hard first name, Remigio, so as a kid he was called Beto. Its a common nickname usually reserved for those named Roberto or Gilberto, or Any-Berto. Beto O’rourke’s first name is Robert. He grew up in El Paso, a predominately Mexican American city. If he grew up with Mexican American kids, I could easily see them calling him Beto.

Unfortunately Rafael Edward Cruz, “Ted”, has used Beto’s nickname as an attacking point. Unlike Beto, Ted was born and raised in Canada where they called him “Ted” instead of Rafael, or Ed. No one really cares about this and you won’t hear Beto talk about it because unlike Ted, Beto is not an ahole. He prefers to talk about issues important to Texans like keeping your children healthy and curing them when they are not. Cruz on the other hand has nothing but insults to throw at his base.

Cruz will make fun of Beto’s name, claims incorrectly that he supports burning the flag, claims incorrectly (again) he will take away guns, claims incorrectly (yet again) that Beto will make Texans eat tofu and dye their hair red, even though many Texans eat tofu and have their hair dyed. It’s all Ted has. Insults. Nothing else. He can’t run on his record of shutting down the government while reading Green Eggs and Ham, his late response to hurricane Harvey, or his fake outrage towards Trump, or how he sucks up to anyone who will further his ego and political aspirations. He can’t talk about the tax cuts for his rich donors, his attack on pre-existing coverage for kids with diabetes. And he can’t talk about his loving support for a racist, politically ignorant, lying, asshole of a human being, Donald Trump, because Donald Trump is a racist, politically ignorant, lying, asshole of a human being that called his wife a dog face.

Hopefully Ted will learn how to become a civil human being again and refer to other Americans by their names without making fun or being disrespectful. And hopefully on Nov 7th he will be calling Beto, Senator Elect.

Movie Review: Papillon

September 6, 2018

Find the original 1973 movie on DVD featuring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman. Rent it. Watch it. Save yourself $9.53.

In the original movie they were able to show how the human body would deteriorate after years in solitary confinement. In the new one Charlie Hunnan, at the end of the movie looked like he did at the beginning. Somehow he had all of his perfect teeth, his sanity, and a nice haircut throughout the movie. It was almost laughable to see Charlie coming out of a 5 year confinement and slowly turning into the camera looking as if he was in for only a few days. They really missed this moment. In the original I can remember McQueen sticking his head out of his cell, spitting out a tooth, and laughing in a crazy way. There was nothing in this movie that showed the aging of Charlie.

His acting was just so-so but you expect that from Jax…I mean Charlie. He can’t seem to get out of the Sons of Anarchy role. Contributing to this Chibs from SOA, Tommy Flanagan, had a very short cameo. Charlie was the right person to play Steve McQueen. At times, maybe on purpose, he actually looked like McQueen in a few scenes.

Wasn’t worth 2 hours and $9.53 especially at AMC with no reclining seats.

58 petrochemical tank terminal coming to Clear Lake?

September 5, 2018

Candidate for Harris County Commissioner, Adrian Garcia, has raised the flag on a proposed petrochemical tank storage facility at Clear Lake City Blvd and Hwy 3. From his press release:

“I’m taking a stand against polluters who are making our families and children sick,” said Garcia. “It is reported that Hurricane Harvey’s biggest polluter, Magellan Midstream Tank Terminal in Galena Park, now wants to build a massive petrochemical tank terminal of 58 tanks at the edge of Clear Lake on land that flooded Horsepen Bayou so badly a car was swept off Hwy 3, drowning the driver during 2015’s May rain event,”.

The proposed location is across the street from Ellington and could contribute to an high flooding risk area. During heavy rains this intersection floods easily as well as Clear Lake Blvd from Hwy 3 to the Bay Knoll subdivision. Last Friday I saw a crew putting up the for sale signs for this property that has been home to oil rigs and cattle for decades. About 10 years ago the community killed a proposal that would allow the dumping of sewer waste on the property as “fertilizer”. They were full of fertilizer. NASA management helped stop this by citing a hazard from birds to their aircraft.

A map provided by the Southbelt Leader shows the proposed 58 storage tanks from Hwy 3 to I45 on Clear Lake City Blvd. Click on the pic for a larger view.

Besides the flooding hazard, according to the press release, the company proposing the tank terminal, Magellan, had a spill of  ½ million gallons of gasoline during Harvey. So we will need to keep an eye on this proposal. Clear Lake residents have been successful in stopping the fertilizer dumping, the proposed San Jacinto Rail carrying explosive chemicals north of Clear Lake, and was successful in stopping the development of the old golf course.

Surely there will be hearings on this.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton' #whitepower Problem

September 5, 2018

Is this is an incredible display of racism by a member of the Paxton legal team during the Kavanaugh hearing for Supreme Court? Or it is nothing but a simple hand jester that is saying “Nothing to see here. Everything is fine.” You decide. Zina Bash was appointed by Paxton as the senior counsel on his  executive leadership team in July of 2018. From the Washington Post:

Popular Twitter personalities and accounts such as Amy Siskind, Eugene Gu and the Palmer Report tweeted that Bash had flashed a “white-power” symbol, drawing a flurry of engagement on the social media platform.

While sitting behind Kavanaugh Zina directly in camera view Bash was seen flashing the white power sign. According to the Post this really isn’t a racist hand signal, it is nothing but the OK sign. Like OK I’m flashing a white power signal.

Her husband, John Bash, the United States attorney for Western Texas, took to twitter and claimed the following:

Yea. Right. He claims she was just resting her arms in a natural manner. I can’t remember ever sitting, standing, or sleeping while flashing a known white power sign. Ever. I ain’t buying it and Ken Paxton shouldn’t either. Wake up folks.

Harris County Republic Party fails at voter suppression

August 31, 2018
Alan Vera (from village republic women)

I said it last week:

According to the Press the Harris County Republican Party’s Ballot Security Committee has issued 4000 challenges to voter registration which the County Tax Assessor must respond to with the letter received by residents of the Third Ward. According to republicans this is a legal tactic much like conspiring with Russia to win an election. I wonder what would happen if the County Attorney took action and investigated this a bit deeper.

Well, they did. From the Houston Chronicle:

The Harris County Attorney’s office said Tuesday that the 4,000 voter registrations challenged by a county Republican Party official were invalid, and the voter registrar should not have sent suspension notices to more than 1,700 county voters.

And BOOM! Bitch. I guess I need to rescind my challenge of Alan Vera, the chairman of the Harris County Republic Party’s Ballot Security Committee. Its sad that they even have a Ballot Security Committee. You would think someone like Vera, a former Director at Greater Houston Partnership would have something better to do than voter suppression. Maybe like voter registration or trying to convince a group of young people of color that the republic party isn’t a bunch of racist, politically ignorant, lying, corrupt bag of dicks.

According to the Chronicle Vera will “Take up follow-up actions” so I guess reaching out to young people of color isn’t going to happen. SAD!

TX AG Ken Paxton: Party invitation for killing pre-existing condition coverage

August 30, 2018

On Sept 10th, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton will lead the legal team of Republican attorneys and AG’s across the country to once and for all kill the pre-existing coverage mandate. According to a press release, Paxton will throw a party to celebrate:

AG Paxton Invites Texans to Celebrate the Death of the Pre-Existing Health Insurance Mandate

Thursday, August 30, 2018 – Austin

Attorney General Ken Paxton invites all Texans to celebrate with him and his attorneys when they successfully kill health care coverage for pre-existing conditions. According to Paxton “We will celebrate restoring freedom of choice of coverage for all Texans. For the many Texans without an ailment like diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure, or other pre-existing conditions, they will have the freedom to choose a policy that covers only healthy individuals at a substantial cost benefit.”
Paxton, as the Texas AG has been selected to lead the challenge to the Affordable Care Act. If successful health insurance coverage will revert back to pre-ACA policies. This along with removing the mandatory coverage mandate of the ACA will result in a successful dismantling the protections provided by the ACA. “Since Congress was not able to repeal the ACA, as they have promised for 10 years, I will do it piecemeal. In the end pre-existing coverage will end and we will celebrate!”
The Texas Attorney General invites all healthy Texans to the South Lawn of the Texas Capitol Sept 10, 2018 at 5:00 PM. No accommodations will be provided for the disabled, except for Governor Abbott since he has tax funded health care for life to protect him and his family. Their pre-existing conditions will always be covered as will mine. Everyone else should consider getting healthy, losing some damn weight, quit drinking and eating fried chicken, or go find some free healthcare somewhere. Consider Mexico or Canada.

Why do you have to be a dick about everything: Donald Trump

August 29, 2018

As I have said in the past:

I’ve always wanted to start a new series called “Why do you have to be a dick about everything?” dedicated to the elected officials who just act like a bag of dicks.

My first was about Texas Congressman Louie Gohmert and today it is Donald Trump. For the Donald, it isn’t hard to be a dick. That is what he is. A dick. Maybe he shouldn’t be allowed to compete for this title since he is such a dick every moment of every day but today he gets a special mention.

Senator John McCain passed away from his battle with brain cancer. For anyone who has witnessed a loved one dying from cancer, it leaves a mark. I’ts a horrible disease and yet Trump found a way to make it worse. He refused to issue a statement on his passing. He refused to leave the flag at half staff only reversing his order after pressure from Veteran organizations. He refused to answer questions about John McCain’s passing or his legacy when directly asked during a press conference. Instead he sat with his arms crossed like a 32 year old coworker who’s idea at the team meeting was rejected due to lack of research. He pouted.

He finally released a statement from the White House that was tepid at best, late, and as sincere as an email from a coworker apologizing for his behavior at the last team meeting.

His actions just begs the question: Why do you have to be a dick about everything?

Political signs 101

August 28, 2018

Signs don’t win elections, but….as part of a well balanced campaign of fundraising, voter contact, and media outreach they can definitely help push a candidate to victory.

Studies have shown the ton of signs at a polling location does not increase turnout or votes in favor of the candidate. Remember the last time you were undecided, or didn’t know what the hell you were doing, and saw the polling landscape littered with signs and thought “Gee, I think I will vote for that person”? Neither do I. Will this stop a group of people going out at 4:00 AM to polling locations in their area and put up a strategically number of candidate signs? No. So expect to see a ton of signs on November 6.

Signs in the yard are great to show your enthusiasm and to strike up conversations with your neighbors. It also brings out the opposition to put up signs of candidates they probably don’t even know just to show opposition. (You know who I am talking about) Signs in the yards encourages those doing the heavy lifting of block walking. Sometimes they would drop by just to thank the owner for having the courage of putting one up.

Signs in the medians and right of ways are illegal but many supporters still do it especially those who think signs can win an election and have bought way too many early on in the campaign. It is fun to drive down a busy street and see your favorite candidate’s signs at every corner. Again, it encourages those doing the heavy lifting. These signs do not last long with the “bandit” sign police in force during the election season.

And then you have the big signs scattered throughout the district on fences, on empty lots, businesses and personal property. Most businesses will not put up signs for fear of losing customers or when their candidate is not well liked like Ted Cruz. It’s a pretty big turn off. Putting up signs on empty lots are mostly tolerated since the owners are probably no where near the area and the management company couldn’t care less.

So, get a yard sign, put it up, and go vote. Just remember “Signs don’t win elections” but I sure do like seeing the BETO signs all over my neighborhood!!!!!

Isn't 16 years of Dan Patrick enough?

August 27, 2018

Texas Lt. Governor is too embarrassed to defend his record of achievements in Texas with his opponent Mike Collier, so he is going to debate Geraldo Rivera instead. From the Austin Statemen:

Democratic rival Mike Collier, who has been pressing to debate Patrick without success, was less than pleased, calling the Rivera challenge a stunt and dismissing Patrick as a “clown.”

From the San Antonio Express News

Clown is right. Patrick is the leader of the white wing of the republic party, the far white wing. He is lucky those in education, including teachers, parents, administrators, etc, still won’t take the time to vote and those who do vote the wrong way. That goes for those in law enforcement, public sector employees and Hispanics. His record of leadership is one that would make any white winger proud.

Under Patrick’s leadership teacher’s salaries have not kept up with the national average. Spending for our public schools has dropped to record lows. Texas now ranks (or reeks) #43 in the nation for public education. Health care costs for retired teachers have skyrocketed and retirement benefits have been cut. This is nothing to brag about or debate your opponent about.

Patrick ushered in open carry of loaded assault rifles in Texas against the wishes of the law enforcement community and just about everyone else. He had the power to stop this insanity but instead fully endorsed it as if walking around the streets with a loaded assault rifle makes our streets safer. (it doesn’t) When 5 policemen in Dallas were gunned down with an AK-47 type of weapon Patrick was silent. He was silent about his open carry bill when 26 were killed in Sutherland with a Ruger AR-556. He finally spoke up after 8 students were killed in Santa Fe by donating metal detectors for an ill conceived, limited protection, gimmick that did not address the issue of gun violence.

Patrick as a Senator and Lt Governor has created a tax haven for businesses in Texas passing the deficits on to the tax payers of Texas. Cuts to education and services followed, as planned.

Patrick has been the champion of the so-called “Bathroom bill”, another brain fart of an idea. Instead of addressing gun violence, or teachers salaries, or property taxes, Patrick has focused on the number one issue on the minds of Texans, which bathroom kids should use.

So with his record of cuts to our teachers, assault weapons on demand, property taxes out of control, and policing of bathrooms, just to name a few,  it is no wonder Dan Patrick would decline an opportunity to debate his opponent.

Watch Geraldo kick his ass.

The GOP: Comrades of Corruption

August 26, 2018

Remember when the republic party was the party of “conservative”family values? Neither do I.

The list is growing each day of republicans who are stealing their donor’s money, profiting from insider trading, committing conspiracy to defraud the United States, tax evasion, cheating on their spouses, etc etc etc. It’s sickening. Here are just a few examples of republican values in recent action:

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. Currently serving and is up for re-election. Indicted 3 years ago on 3 felony counts of security violations. Trial scheduled for next year.

Former State Representative Joe Driver (Texas) Plead guilty to a felony of abuse of office, served 5 years probation, retained his $57,000/year pension and free healthcare.

Former Congressman Steve Stockman (Texas) Found guilty on 23 counts of 24 felony counts of campaign finance abuse. He is currently serving in the Harris County jail pending an appeal.

Former Congressman Tom DeLay (Texas) Resigned from Congress. Was found guilty of money laundering in 2010.

Spending Campaign Cash: Congressman Duncan Hunter

August 23, 2018

After reading about Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter’s spending habits of his donors money I thought “There are over 200 more republicans to look at….”.

Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter and his wife were indicted for misuse of their donors money. According to the 47 page indictment reported by CNN:

“The Hunters illegally used Campaign funds, among other things, to purchase the following: Hotel rooms, airline tickets and upgrades, meals and food, and entertainment expenses for vacations for themselves and their friends and family, including more than $14,000 for a family Thanksgiving vacation in Italy in November 2015; more than $6,500 for a family vacation to Hawaii in April 2015; more than $3,700 for a family vacation to Las Vegas and Boise in July 2015; more than $2,400 for a Las Vegas couples vacation in August 2011; and more vacations to destinations such as Lake Tahoe, Pittsburgh, London, and Washington.”

It’s staggering to think Hunter and his wife used $250,000 of his donors money on personal items. His treasurer must have turned on him because finding these abuses are extremely hard by just reading financial reports. I should know, I have filed many ethics complaints on the state level. It’s not easy.

Ten years ago a small group of activists found major abuses with republican lawmakers in Texas. These abuses included using donors money to buy a condo, hiding personal purchases behind a credit card, and much more. Over 50 complaints were filed with about 48 accepted. Fines ranged from $1000-$75,000. Here are some of the more interesting complaints:

  • The $75,000 fine was against Harris County Commissioner Jerry Eversole. The complaint alleged using nearly $250,000 for personal items including antique western wear, antique books, golf, and Starbucks to name just a few.
  • Senator Jane Nelson hid $2000/month behind a fictitious company called Twin Star when in fact the payment was to her husband to buy a condo. The Ethics Commission, after a year, dismissed the complaint and sealed the investigation.
  • Former State Representative John Davis purchased a pair of $1500 cowboy boots using his donors money. It had the State seal on the front.
  • A state representative from Lubbock paid his wife over $30,000/year for accounting services. He only raised $75,000. He was told to stop by the TEC. A year later he was paying an accounting firm $36,000/year for accounting services. The firm was newly created and was owned by his wife. He did not seek re-election.
Maybe it is time to start looking again……
